This history project was created by Trevor Barron, Kenyala Felder, and Chrys Hawkins. The project began on November 16th, 2022; and was completed on December 6th, 2022. Our goal in this digital history project was to analyze the patterns and dissimilarities of moral panics found in music throughout the second part of the 20th century by analyzing the 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s decades.  Some of the steps we took in completing this project was identifying each decade's idea of moral panic, the artists who incited the panic, and how society reacted. We also looked at how artists countered criticism through their music and we analyzed the patterns found between these decades that created these moral panics. Chrys Hawkins’s work includes the moral panics of the 50’s, featuring songs “Shack, Rattle and Roll“ and “Tutti Frutti.” Trevor Barron presents on the panics through the 70’s with songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Southern Man.”  Lastly, Kenya Felder looks at the outrage of gangsta rap in the 90’s with artist such Snoop Dog and 2 Live Crew.
